Danish Visitors Get a Taste of Malta

8th April, 2014

A group of students from Svendborg Gymnasium, in Denmark, visited Sir M. A. Refalo's Sixth Form. During their visit, Charles Daniel Saliba gave a presentation about the development of the Maltese language through the years and how its characteristics make it unique. Saliba also spoke about Maltese culture and the historical relationship between Malta and Denmark. At the end of the presentation, Marcel Xuereb, the headmaster, presented Jørgensen with the book series Maltese for Foreigners, written by Saliba himself, so that Danish students could enhance their knowledge of the Maltese language, culture and literature. Jørgensen then presented Xuereb and Saliba with her book, Spoken English: Communication Strategies.

Skyjacking – its character, effects and decline

The History Department of the University of Malta organised a two day conference, entitled ‘A Wonderful Future Beckons for Young Gozitan Historians’, at the Ministry of Gozo, under the auspices of the Minister for Gozo, Hon Giovanna Debono, on 19th and 20th October. Attendees included Professor Juanito Camilleri (Rector of the University of Malta), Professor Richard Muscat (Pro-rector), Professor Dominic Fenech (Head of the Department of History and Dean of the Faculty of Arts) and Professor Victor Mallia-Milanes. Charles Daniel Saliba’s plenary paper, ‘Skyjacking – its character, effects and decline,’ analysed the origins of skyjacking, its change in character and effects on humanity, as well as the Mediterranean problems that prompted so many cases in the area.

5th Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Proverbs (ICP11)

6-13th November, 2011

Charles Daniel Saliba was invited in this colloquium as a main speaker to present his plenary paper, Maltese proverbs: a reflection of Mediterranean history and culture? He analysed the main works of contributors to the study of Maltese paremiology, throwing light on the language habits of Maltese society, its mentality and psychological make-up. He even demonstrated that the Mediterranean cross-currents could be detected in Maltese proverbs. Mr Saliba also presented Professor Rui João Baptista Soares, with a bibliography of published works on Maltese proverbs, to serve as a springboard for further linguistic analysis of the subject.

Slovenian Special Forces Instructor conducts a seminar at the Gozo Karate Club

The Gozo Karate Club (Tenchi Ryu Jutsu) had the honour to host Shinin Borut Kincl, 6th Dan Black Belt, founder and head of the Kempo Arnis Federation (KAF) and instructor to the Slovenian Special Forces. Sensei Charles Daniel Saliba presented the club’s guest with his book Hijacking in the Mediterranean. The Five Cases of Malta. Kincl received it warmly, saying that his work in the security sector made him especially appreciative of books like this.

Gozo Karate Club represents Malta in Slovenia

24-26th June, 2011
For the fourth year running, Shihan Borut Kincl, 6th Dan Black Belt, founder and head of the Kempo Arnis Federation (KAF), organised the Warrior Tribes Gathering and Tribal Challenge in Slovenia. International experts led intensive training in different martial arts styles and fighting techniques. The exercises included fighting with and against weapons as well as ground fighting and techniques for self-defence in different scenarios. Shihan Borut Kincl himself, the Slovenian Special Forces instructor, shared his expertise, as did Major Avi Nardia, anti-terrorism expert and leader of Kapap Combatives (Kapap is a Hebrew acronym for face-to-face combat).

Other experts who gave their time and knowledge were Tuhon Ray Dionaldo, founder of the Filipino Combat System (FCS), specializing in knife fighting, and Guy Rafaeli, originator of the Israeli Combat System. The training camp also hosted the Tribal Challenge, a fight against opponents wielding sticks. People from many nations attended, among them Filipinos, British, Gozitans, Italians, Israelis, Serbs, Slovenians and Americans.

TENCHI RYU KARATE JUTSU SUMMER CAMP

22nd-26th July, 2010.
The Tenchi Ryu Karate Jutsu Gozo Club held a summer training camp at the Gozo Sports Complex. For the event, which consisted of over 20 hours of instruction in Kenpo, Aikido, Spirit Combat and Kickboxing, the Gozo Karate Club had the honour to host Master Edward Clare 5th Dan Degree black belt and other top Gozitan instructors mainly Sensei Jason De Bono from the Gozo Aikido Club and Sensei Mario Saliba from the Gozo Spirit Combat and Kickboxing club.

Master Clare, who is the head instructor of the Gozo Club, came over from the UK with some of his students to conduct training sessions at the training camp. His sessions focused mainly on pressure point applications. These applications can be applied to any style with minimum force, proper punching technique, angle and direction to activate pressure points and transfer energy from and to your opponent.

Tenchi Ryu Club instructors Sensei Joe Portelli, Sensei Alex Vella Muskat and Sensei Charles Daniel Saliba conducted various sessions, focusing on fighting fundamentals, mental conditioning for self defence, punching and kicking techniques, joint locks and breaks, pressure point fighting and self-defence techniques.

Talk about Writing a Book

As part of the Comenius Project ‘Let’s Learn Through Our Cultural Heritage and its Diversity’, Agius de Soldanis school organised several activities dedicated to the Maltese culture. One of the activities organised was a speech for Form 1 student about the process involved in writing a book. This speech was conducted by Charles Daniel Saliba, the author of over 18 books.

World Book Day

23rd April, 2007.
An exhibition of new books for the Gozo Libraries was inaugurated at the Gozo Public Library on the occasion of World Book Day, which is celebrated annually around the world on the 23 April. In this event Charles Daniel Saliba delivered a speech on the process involved in publishing a book.
