The Excellence Center in Europe

Germany, Halle (Saale)

For his professional development, Dr Charles Daniel Saliba was funded by Erasmus to visit The Excellence Center in Europe for a week, where he could observe the various educational activities done in this centre including the teaching of languages such as Arabic, German and English. Moreover, Saliba completed an intensive training in the Levantine Arabic dialect (Shami).

Saliba also visited the Department of Arabic at the Oriental Institute at the University of Leipzig where he had a meeting with Professor Kristina Stock and presented a copy of the Maltesisch für Ausländer series to the Library of Oriental Studies.

Danish Visitors Get a Taste of Malta

8th April, 2014

A group of students from Svendborg Gymnasium, in Denmark, visited Sir M. A. Refalo's Sixth Form. During their visit, Charles Daniel Saliba gave a presentation about the development of the Maltese language through the years and how its characteristics make it unique. Saliba also spoke about Maltese culture and the historical relationship between Malta and Denmark. At the end of the presentation, Marcel Xuereb, the headmaster, presented Jørgensen with the book series Maltese for Foreigners, written by Saliba himself, so that Danish students could enhance their knowledge of the Maltese language, culture and literature. Jørgensen then presented Xuereb and Saliba with her book, Spoken English: Communication Strategies.

Skyjacking – its character, effects and decline

The History Department of the University of Malta organised a two day conference, entitled ‘A Wonderful Future Beckons for Young Gozitan Historians’, at the Ministry of Gozo, under the auspices of the Minister for Gozo, Hon Giovanna Debono, on 19th and 20th October. Attendees included Professor Juanito Camilleri (Rector of the University of Malta), Professor Richard Muscat (Pro-rector), Professor Dominic Fenech (Head of the Department of History and Dean of the Faculty of Arts) and Professor Victor Mallia-Milanes. Charles Daniel Saliba’s plenary paper, ‘Skyjacking – its character, effects and decline,’ analysed the origins of skyjacking, its change in character and effects on humanity, as well as the Mediterranean problems that prompted so many cases in the area.

5th Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Proverbs (ICP11)

Charles Daniel Saliba was invited in this colloquium as a main speaker to present his plenary paper, Maltese proverbs: a reflection of Mediterranean history and culture? He analysed the main works of contributors to the study of Maltese paremiology, throwing light on the language habits of Maltese society, its mentality and psychological make-up. He even demonstrated that the Mediterranean cross-currents could be detected in Maltese proverbs. Mr Saliba also presented Professor Rui João Baptista Soares, with a bibliography of published works on Maltese proverbs, to serve as a springboard for further linguistic analysis of the subject.

As part of the Comenius Project ‘Let’s Learn Through Our Cultural Heritage and its Diversity’, Agius de Soldanis school organised several activities dedicated to the Maltese culture. One of the activities organised was a speech for Form 1 student about the process involved in writing a book. This speech was conducted by Charles Daniel Saliba, the author of over 18 books.

World Book Day
